Call for consultants: Reporting by not-for-profit organizations

Are you experienced in not-for-profit reporting matters? CPA Canada is looking to partner with consultants to develop guidance for members and other stakeholders in the not-for-profit sector.

CPA Canada issues non-authoritative guidance to members and other stakeholders on various topics, including external reporting, audit and assurance, governance, and strategy and risk management. We work closely with stakeholders, volunteers and subject matter experts to develop practical, understandable and timely guidance. One area of particular focus is addressing the needs of members and stakeholders in not-for-profit organizations (NFPOs).

Objective and scope

Our guidance, Improved Annual Reporting by Not-for-Profit Organizations (NFPO Reporting Guide), was last updated in 2011. The NFPO Reporting Guide is designed to assist those responsible for preparing and approving the annual report of a NFPO. It includes guiding principles of reporting, key elements that need to be addressed in a NFPO’s annual report and examples from organizations of different sizes.

We are looking for a consultant to author an update to the NFPO Reporting Guide for relevant changes in external reporting matters and best industry practices. An advisory committee will provide assistance, guidance and oversight for the project. The consultant will provide leadership, both as a technical expert and skilled facilitator, to bring together people and ideas, in order to author a timely, high-quality update to the NFPO Reporting Guide.

Experience

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • At least 10 years of relevant experience either consulting NFPOs on external reporting matters or preparing and reporting on NFPO financial performance and non-financial information to external stakeholders
  • Knowledge of Canadian financial reporting standards applicable to NFPOs
  • Knowledge of current industry trends, accounting, auditing and regulatory developments in Canada and globally impacting stakeholders in the NFPO sector
  • Experience with writing external reporting related materials (e.g., memos, articles, technical resources)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organization/project management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with senior members of the CPA profession and other external stakeholders
  • CPA designation preferred

Commitment and timing

The update to the NFPO Reporting Guide will begin in March 2019 and is expected to be complete by December 2019.
